Upward Bound Gives Back to Community

Students from Arkansas Tech University Upward Bound packed 5,184 food kits for those in need during an event hosted by the Arkansas Foodbank.

The students gave of their time during the 2016 KATV Food for Kids Telethon and Packathon, which took place on Aug. 11-12.

Headquartered in Little Rock, the Arkansas Foodbank operates eight trucks to deliver and pick up food daily, summer/after school programs and back packs for children, local agency food pick up, training and capacity building as well as volunteer and fundraising activities.

Upward Bound is a federally-funded TRIO program that helps high school students with identified barriers to higher education prepare for college. The program began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty.

Arkansas Tech has served area high school students through Upward Bound since receiving its initial grant for the program in 2003. Students from Atkins, Danville, Dardanelle, Dover, Hector, Lamar, Pottsville, Two Rivers and Western Yell County school districts participate in Upward Bound programs through Arkansas Tech.
