Approximately 3,300 individuals turned to Arkansas Tech University during summer 2017 to hone their academic, artistic, athletic and career skills through a variety of camps and conferences.
Camps for youth accounted for the majority of traffic on campus during the months of June, July and August. Band camps for middle school, junior high and high school students attracted more than 800 participants, while attendance at camps focusing on baseball, basketball, football, softball, tennis and volleyball totaled close to 2,000 young athletes.
ATU Upward Bound, a federally-funded program that helps high school students with identified barriers to higher education prepare for college, drew 110 students from area high schools to campus for a chance to experience life as a college student.
Additional youth from the Arkansas River Valley came to the Tech campus in Russellville for camps for culinary arts and cheerleading and dance, while high school students and teachers from China traveled to ATU for the Great American Adventure Camp.
Arkansas Tech Career Center, a facility operated by ATU-Ozark Campus and located adjacent to Russellville High School, developed and offered two new camps this summer, one in culinary arts and the other in computer coding.
Opportunities during summer 2017 at ATU extended to adult learners through conferences for firefighters, agriculture teachers, educators seeking to teach English to speakers of other languages and teachers specializing in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
