Get in the Groove with the ATU Jazz Ensemble

Pieces written by Sammy Nestico and Stan Kenton will be among those featured by the Arkansas Tech University Jazz Ensemble during a performance on Friday, Nov. 17.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium, 407 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public.

The ensemble will play Nestico’s “Ya Gotta Try” and “Groovin’ Easy” as well as Kenton’s “Yesterdays” and “Central Park North.” Jarod Apple, who serves as teaching assistant for the ATU Jazz Ensemble, will offer a tenor saxophone solo as part of the performance of “Yesterdays.”

Additional selections include “Michelangelo” by Astor Piazzolla, “The Groove Master” by Bob Mitzer, “Moanin'” by Charles Mingus and “A Few Good Men” by Gordon Goodwin.

The members of the ATU Jazz Ensemble for fall 2017 are: Apple, Tina Christiansen, Jordan Davis, Ger Vang and Manuel Valente on saxophone; Colby Lawyer, Trevor Gould, Dillon Green, David Hall, Drake Hyche and Dalton Snow on trumpet; Ethan Alonzo, Jacob Hawkins, Holden Jones and Riley Kelley on trombone; and Michael Barker, Cole Birmingham, Jarred Harley, Ian Neiswender and Jamie Williams in the rhythm section.

Dr. Sean Reed, assistant professor of music, serves as director for the ATU Jazz Ensemble.
