Culinary Camp Returns to Campus

Area girls will once again have the opportunity to learn more about the culinary and hospitality industry this summer when the Arkansas Tech University Department of Parks, Recreation and Hospitality Administration hosts its annual summer culinary institute.

The institute, which is open to girls entering grades 9-12, will take place June 6-10.

Chartwells is sponsoring the institute, and it will take place at Chambers Cafeteria. The cost to participate is $75, and only the first 50 participants to apply will be accepted.

Over the course of the week, participants will learn about the industry and have the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen preparing several dishes. The institute will meet daily from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. during the week of the camp.

In addition to preparing dishes, participants will also learn more about the science behind food and the hospitality industry as a whole.

The students taking part will also be able to tour campus and learn more about the university.

At the conclusion of the camp, participants will have an opportunity to showcase the skills they have learned during a celebration event for friends and family.

Susan West, assistant professor of hospitality administration at Arkansas Tech, said the program helps participants understand all that a career in the field entails.

“We are excited to be working with Chartwells again on this summer institute. This workshop helps showcase the wide variety of career opportunities available in this industry,” said West.

Participants will study under volunteer female chefs from around the state.

The deadline to register to take part is Friday, May 23. For more information e-mail West at swest7@atu.edu or call (479) 356-6205.
