Suns, Blossoms Split GAC Series

Arkansas Tech University and the University of Arkansas-Monticello split a four-game Great American Conference softball series at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Friday and Saturday.

The Golden Suns (29-17 overall, 23-11 GAC) will visit nationally third-ranked Harding University (42-4, 32-2) for a 2 p.m. GAC doubleheader in Searcy on Tuesday, April 18.

Game One: Tech 2, UAM 1

Ashton Sangster’s single in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in Gaby Vasquez with the winning run in a 2-1 Arkansas Tech victory against UA-Monticello in Friday’s first game.

Jalissa Gum (13-8) pitched a complete game for the Golden Suns. She allowed one unearned run on five hits over 12 innings of work. Gum recorded 17 strikeouts.

Tech’s Janie Knowles forced extra innings with a run batted in on a double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Game Two: Tech 1, UAM 0

An error by UA-Monticello in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed Sangster to score and give Arkansas Tech a 1-0 win in the nightcap on Friday.

Cara Tolar (5-3) tossed a three-hit shutout for the Golden Suns. She notched six strikeouts in eight innings.

Game Three: UAM 4, Tech 1

Kendra Coleman pitched a complete game, hit a home run and drove in three runs to lift UA-Monticello to a 4-1 victory in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Coleman (18-4) struck out eight Golden Suns in seven innings.

Game Four: UAM 3, Tech 2

UA-Monticello secured a split of the four-game series by defeating Arkansas Tech 3-2 in the series finale on Saturday.

Kristen McNabb broke a 2-2 tie by racing home on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning.

UAM starting pitcher Kaylee Freeman (7-7) held the Golden Suns scoreless over the final three frames, including stranding runners at second and third base in the last of the sixth inning.
