Reddies Outlast Wonder Boys in Overtime

Richard Stammetti’s 2-yard touchdown run in overtime and a subsequent stand by the Henderson State University defense gave the Reddies a 38-31 victory over Arkansas Tech University in Great American Conference play at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field in Russellville on Saturday night.

The Wonder Boys (0-2) took a 31-24 lead on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Carter Burcham to Chris Eastburn with 6:06 left in the fourth quarter.

Henderson State (1-1) responded with a 9-play, 88-yard touchdown drive to force overtime. Stammetti hit Chase Lodree for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left and Temo Martinez made the extra point to tie the score at 31-31.

After the Reddies scored on their overtime possession, Arkansas Tech threw two incomplete passes and Burcham ran for 1 yard to bring up fourth-and-9 from the 24-yard line.

The final play of the game was an incomplete pass that sparked Henderson State’s celebration and gave the Wonder Boys back-to-back losses to begin a season for the first time since 1996.

Burcham was 20-of-45 for 306 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start. Terrez Hampton caught eight passes for 168 yards, including a career-long 84-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. Tech’s Christian Cole scored two touchdowns.

K.J. Reid made a team-high 11 tackles for Arkansas Tech.

HSU’s Stammetti was 25-of-56 for 315 yards and four touchdowns. Cameron Sonnier notched 13 tackles for the Reddies.

The Wonder Boys will visit Oklahoma Baptist University (2-0) for a 1 p.m. GAC contest at Crain Stadium in Shawnee, Okla., on Saturday, Sept. 15. Radio station KCJC 102.3 FM and www.arkansastechsports.com will provide live coverage.
