Records Fall, Wonder Boys Rout Bison 97-67

Arkansas Tech University’s 3-point shooting records in men’s basketball were re-written on Saturday afternoon.

The Wonder Boys (15-8 overall, 9-8 Great American Conference) made a school-record 20 3-pointers — including a record-breaking 12 treys by Alex Brown — and rolled to a 97-67 GAC victory over Oklahoma Baptist University at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

The previous school record for 3-pointers in a game was 19, which was established against the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Feb. 28, 1994, and subsequently tied on two occasions.

Brown surpassed an even older school record for most 3-pointers in a game by an individual, breaking the standard of 11 treys established by Gray Townsend against Oral Roberts University on Nov. 27, 1989.

A junior guard from Vernon, Fla., Brown scored a career-high 41 points on 14-of-24 shooting from the floor, including 12-of-20 from 3-point range.

“He got it going today, didn’t he?” asked Chad Kline, ATU head coach, in reference to Brown’s performance. “It looked like he was shooting it into the ocean, and he was turning down shots. I had to yell at him to keep shooting a couple of times, but that’s just the type of kid he is…unselfish. When we shoot it like that, it is hard for anyone to beat us.”

Brown scored 30 points in the first half alone, helping the Wonder Boys build a 55-23 cushion at the intermission.

The only questions in the second half were related to the record books. Brown broke the record for 3-pointers by an individual with 5:03 remaining, and Mason Cline gave Tech its record-breaking 20th trey of the day with 53 seconds left.

Montrell Williams added 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Wonder Boys, while R.J. Glasper had 10 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists.

Chandler Rickey notched 16 points and nine rebounds for the Bison (9-14, 6-11).

Arkansas Tech will journey to the W.T. Watson Athletic Center in Magnolia on Thursday, Feb. 15, to face the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Radio station KCJC 102.3 FM and www.arkansastechsports.com will provide live coverage.
