Muleriders Top Wonder Boys in Series Finale

Southern Arkansas University came from behind in the final two innings to defeat Arkansas Tech University 12-4 on Monday in the finale of a three-game Great American Conference baseball series at Tech Field in Russellville.

The Wonder Boys (29-17 overall, 22-8 GAC) won 2-of-3 games during the series.

With their win on Monday, the nationally second-ranked Muleriders (34-10, 26-4) clinched the 2017 GAC regular season baseball title.

ATU led 4-3 after seven innings, but SAU scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and six more in the top of the ninth to avoid the series sweep.

Trevor Rucker was 3-for-3 with two home runs and four runs batted in for the Muleriders, while SAU’s Cortland McPherson finished 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs.

Marcus Wilson collected four base hits and Dylan McDearmon was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Wonder Boys.

SAU relief pitcher Eric Schildt (2-2) worked one inning to earn the win on the mound. He was succeeded by Makenzy Larsen, who pitched the final two innings for his seventh save of the year.

Arkansas Tech will host Ouachita Baptist University for a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Tech Field on Tuesday, April 25. Admission will be free.
