Golden Suns Win in GAC Tourney 1st Round

Arkansas Tech University pitcher Jalissa Gum became a 20-game winner for a second consecutive season and the Golden Suns advanced to the winners’ bracket at the Great American Conference Tournament by defeating Southern Nazarene University 2-0 in first-round action at Bentonville on Thursday morning.

Gum (20-10) limited the Crimson Storm to two hits over seven innings. The two-time GAC pitcher of the year struck out 13 Southern Nazarene batters and did not walk any.

Arkansas Tech (36-20) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashton Sangster’s triple drove in Gum to make it 1-0, and Cara Tolar followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Sangster home.

SNU pitcher Katelyn Brown (18-16) went the distance in the circle. She was charged with two runs on three hits.

The Golden Suns will face Southern Arkansas University at 3:30 p.m. today (Thursday, May 4) in a winners’ bracket contest at the double elimination tournament.
