Golden Suns Take 3-of-4 From Reddies

Arkansas Tech University earned three victories and suffered one loss in a four-game Great American Conference softball series against Henderson State University at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex in Russellville on Sunday and Monday.

The Golden Suns (18-6 overall, 9-3 GAC) will visit Southern Nazarene University for a four-game GAC series in Bethany, Okla., on Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Live coverage will be provided by www.arkansastechsports.com.

Game One: Tech 4, HSU 1

Megan Goodnight’s walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning secured a 4-1 Arkansas Tech victory over Henderson State in the series opener on Sunday.

Tech’s Bailey Shaffer (6-1) pitched three shutout innings of relief and struck out five Reddies.

Game Two: HSU 2, Tech 1

Henderson State pitchers Becca Almond and Mallory Brewer combined to limit Arkansas Tech to four base hits in a 2-1 Reddies’ victory on Sunday evening.

Almond (2-0) surrendered one run on four hits over five innings. Brewer got the final six outs without allowing a base runner to pick up her second save of the season.

Game Three: Tech 10, HSU 1

Goodnight pitched a complete game and drove in three runs to lead Arkansas Tech to a mercy rule-shortened 10-1 win over Henderson State in Monday’s first game.

Bailey Bunch added two RBIs and scored two runs for the Golden Suns.

Game Four: Tech 6, HSU 3

Janie Knowles’ bat and effective relief pitching helped Arkansas Tech topple Henderson State 6-3 in the series finale.

Knowles went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Kristen Dempsey (4-2) allowed one run on three hits over four and two-thirds innings out of the Suns’ bullpen.

She struck out six Reddies before giving way to Goodnight, who retired the final batter of the game to leave the bases loaded and earn her sixth save of 2018.
