Golden Suns Golf Wins Midwest Classic

Arkansas Tech University broke out of a three-way tie for first place to earn the team championship at the 2017 Midwest Classic, which was hosted by the University of Central Missouri at Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg, Mo., on Monday and Tuesday.

The Golden Suns were tied with Augustana University and tournament host Central Missouri at the end of the first round after all three teams returned matching 18-hole totals of 306.

Arkansas Tech shot 307 on Tuesday to finish at 613 and edge out Augustana (2nd, 615) and Central Missouri (3rd, 616) for the title.

A total of 19 teams competed in the Midwest Classic, which was the Golden Suns’ final tournament on the fall portion of their 2017-18 golf schedule.

Arkansas Tech placed three players — Avery Struck (T-2nd, 73-76-149), Peerada Piddon (T-6th, 74-77-151) and Makenzie Douglas (T-8th, 77-77-154) — in the top eight of the final individual standings.

Pia Nunbhakdi (T-27th, 82-77-159), Allie Weiner (T-56th, 87-82-169) and Holly Standing (T-65th, 85-87-172) also represented the Golden Suns in Warrensburg.

Arkansas Tech will resume its 2017-18 women’s golf schedule during the spring 2018 semester.
