Golden Suns Cruise to 12th Straight Win

The beat goes on.

Nationally 15th-ranked Arkansas Tech University won its 12th consecutive women’s basketball game by rolling past Ouachita Baptist University 93-52 in Great American Conference action at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday night.

The Golden Suns (18-2 overall, 16-0 GAC) got layups from Danielle Frachiseur and Aujana Dawkins and a 3-pointer from Tierani Richardson to close the first quarter on a 7-0 run. Tech led 24-14 after one period and extended the advantage to 48-30 at halftime.

The Suns pulled away in the third quarter by making their first five field goal tries of the second half. Frachiseur’s third-quarter-ending 3-pointer sent Arkansas Tech to the final 10 minutes with a 70-43 lead.

Tech head coach Dave Wilbers was able to rest four of his starters — Dawkins, Fatima Adams, Bre Brooks and Anissa Pounds — for the entire fourth quarter. Thursday’s game was the first of three in five days for the Golden Suns.

“That was very valuable,” said Wilbers of the rest for his starters. “We have two tough games coming up. Our players know that. They’ve been looking forward to that. It’s a good time of year to play basketball. You play a game, you practice one day and you play another game.”

Adams had 21 points and seven rebounds on Thursday night. It was her 30th career game with 20 or more points for the Golden Suns.

Brooks added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Dawkins chipped in 10 points for Arkansas Tech, which extended its home winning streak to 18 games.

Tech finished with a 29-8 edge in points off turnovers.

Breanna Harris scored 16 points for Ouachita Baptist (7-15, 4-12).

The Golden Suns will visit Southern Arkansas University for a 1 p.m. GAC contest at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center in Magnolia on Saturday, Feb. 13.
