Basketball Teams Hit the Road Thursday

Watson Athletic Center, Magnolia Radio/Internet: KWKK 100.9 FM/www.arkansastechsports.com Series: Tech leads 69-8 About the Golden Suns: It wasn’t easy, but Arkansas Tech extended its women’s basketball winning streak against Southern Arkansas to 18 consecutive games on Dec. 13 with an 87-81 victory at Tucker Coliseum. Junior forward Fatima Adams had 29 points and 10 rebounds. She was 11-of-17 from the field, an effort that helped the Golden Suns shoot 56 percent from the floor as a team. Sophomore guard Anissa Pounds and junior guard Katrina Hayden led the Arkansas Tech backcourt. Pounds scored 15 points, including 3-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, and dished out seven assists. Hayden also made three 3-pointers. She notched 12 points and nine assists. About the Lady Muleriders: Southern Arkansas has lost nine consecutive games. Five of those nine setbacks were by six points or less. Senior forward Chanel Miller has reached double figures in scoring five consecutive games. She has averaged 14.8 points per game over that span. Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (9-10, 5-6 GAC) at SAU Muleriders (12-5, 8-3 GAC) When: Thursday, Jan. 29, 7:30 p.m. Where: W.T. Watson Athletic Center, Magnolia Radio/Internet: KWKK 100.9 FM/www.arkansastechsports.com Series: Tech leads 100-67 About the Wonder Boys: Arkansas Tech made 3-of-4 free throws over the final 12 seconds and forced Southern Arkansas into a key turnover to seal a 77-75 win over the Muleriders on Dec. 13 at Tucker Coliseum. Senior guard Mike Balogun paced the Wonder Boys with 22 points. Junior guard D.J. Jethroe had 14 points for Tech, while junior forward Nick Wayman (11 points), senior center Gary Gaskins (10 points) and senior guard Clarence Willard (10 points) rounded out a quintet of Wonder Boys to reach double figures in scoring. Arkansas Tech is 15-1 in its last 16 men’s basketball meetings with SAU. About the Muleriders: Southern Arkansas is tied with Ouachita Baptist and East Central for first place in the GAC men’s basketball standings. The Muleriders have not won a conference championship in basketball since 1990, when they won the last of their four Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference titles.
