The Arkansas Tech Collegiate Middle Level Association, an affiliate of the National Middle School Association, has been working hard this month spreading the words about the Month of the Young Adolescent.
NMSA recognizes October as the official Month of the Young Adolescent. MOYA’s purpose is to promote awareness on the physical, cognitive, social, moral and emotional changes experienced by this age group.
According to NMSA, the key messages of MOYA are:
• The importance of parents being knowledgeable about young adolescents and being actively involved in their lives;
• The understanding that healthy bodies plus healthy minds equal healthy young adolescents;
• The realization that the education young adolescents experience during this formative period of life will, in large measure, determine the future for all citizens; and
• The knowledge that every young adolescent should have the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and aspirations, and post-secondary education should be a possibility for all.
The CMLA is a professional education organization for college students preparing to become middle level (grades 5-8) teachers.
The organization participates in professional development programs, state and national conferences, events at Tech and community service projects. The executive board of CMLA includes Georgia Wyllia, Amber Davis, Mandy Wilson, Ben Hare, Anna Miller and Hannah Peckel.
Additionally, involvement in CMLA assists students in securing their decision to teach middle level students and enables networking opportunities.
“Because of the professional development opportunities I’ve gotten to experience through CMLA, I feel more prepared and motivated to go out into the field and start teaching,” said Wyllia, president of the organization.
