Students Successful at SkillsUSA National Competition

The winners of the annual SkillsUSA Championships were announced Friday evening, June 25, 2010 at the Awards Ceremony of the National Leadership and Skills Conference. The Conference was held June 21 – June 25, 2010, at the Municipal Auditorium, the Kemper Arena, H. Roe Bartle Hall, the downtown Marriott and the downtown Crown Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 5,600 outstanding career and technical education students joined in the excitement of hands-on competition in ninety-six different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

Working against the clock and each other, the participants proved their expertise in job skills for occupations such as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. There were also competitions in leadership skills, such as extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedures. Students are evaluated on their technical knowledge, production skills and creative abilities.

SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management and are designed to test the skills needed for a successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Safety practices and procedures – an area of great concern to labor and management alike – are judged and graded and constitute a portion of a contestant’s score.

Summer Session Wrapping Up

The first summer session at Arkansas Tech is winding down, which means there are several important dates that students need to know.

Tomorrow is the last day for students to drop a class with a “W.”  Students who wish to drop a class must complete an add/drop form and turn it in to the Office of the Registrar by 5 p.m. on Friday.

The last day of classes for the first summer term will be Friday, July 9.

Students enrolled in the second summer session at Arkansas Tech will begin classes on Monday, July 12, and the last day to register for the second summer term will be Tuesday, July 13.

Students wishing to register for classes for the second term should contact their advisor.  After meeting with their advisor, students will either be registered by their advisor or they will receive a code to register for classes online using the OneTech portal.

Visit the Office of the Registrar website for more information about important dates regarding summer sessions at Arkansas Tech.

Eshcol to Work with International Students

Danny Eshcol has been hired as an international student advisor in the International and Multicultural Student Services Office (IMSSO) at Arkansas Tech.

Eshcol comes to Arkansas Tech after having recently completed his graduate degree at Iowa State University.

While at Iowa State University, Eshcol says he was heavily involved with the international student office and worked to coordinate orientation activities and programming for international students.

“I’m excited to be at Arkansas Tech,” says Eshcol.  “I’m excited about getting to introduce students to America and the Russellville area with all that it has to offer.”

Eschol says he’s been working on programming since his arrival at Arkansas Tech and is learning the schedule and what activities work well for international students at Tech.  He adds, “Once I know the schedule, I can start to look at new events and programming options that will help enhance the experience for our international students and will provide the students with new perspectives.”

Eschol says his goal is to help international students find a home at Arkansas Tech.

“I want to help the students find a community and connect early,” he explains.  “I also want to see greater interaction between the international students and the greater university community. I am excited about the opportunity to do that at Arkansas Tech.”

For more information about international students at Arkansas Tech, contact the International and Multicultural Student Services Office by visiting their website.

Sims Earns Award in Summer League

Arkansas Tech left-handed pitcher Blaine Sims was named Valley Baseball League pitcher of the day in recognition of his efforts for his summer league team on Tuesday.

Sims, a member of the New Market Rebels in the Virginia-based Valley Baseball League, pitched six shutout innings and earned a win over the Winchester Royals on Tuesday. He allowed six hits while striking out nine and walking two.

All Things Valley League, a blog that covers the 12-team league, named Sims its pitcher of the day after the Southpaw helped New Market improve to 6-14 on the season.

Sims is 1-1 this summer with a 4.15 earned run average. He has recorded 22 strike outs in 26 innings of work.

He was 6-4 with a 5.31 ERA as a junior for the 2010 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys, who set a school record with 35 wins.

The Valley Baseball League, founded in 1923, provides current college players with an opportunity to gain valuable experience during the summer months. The league is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, a national affiliation of summer leagues.

According to its Web site, the league has produced more than 1,000 professional baseball players, including a record 79 former players drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June 2008.

Sims and fellow left-handed Arkansas Tech pitcher Jordan Gomez will play for New Market through the end of the season in early August.

Registrar Releases List of Spring ’10 Grads

The Arkansas Tech University Registrar’s Office has released an official and certified list of 610 degrees conferred upon students on the Russellville campus at the conclusion of the spring 2010 semester.
